Day 30: Social Grazing

Today begins my 4 day weekend.  I’m looking forward to relaxing, swimming, and catching up on movies.  It’s also my birthday on Monday which means lots of cake and ice cream.  :)  I plan on having small servings, but I don’t believe cake is on the Sonoma Diet.  This got me thinking how most of our social occasions are defined by food.

When you think of birthdays, you undoubtedly picture the images of a cake topped with candles.  Wedding cake seems to be an integral tradition.  Longer business meetings usually indicate that snacks and drinks are provided.  Baseball games bring up images of hotdogs and peanuts.  Halloween = candy.  Thanksgiving = turkey.  Christmas is grandma’s homemade cookies and delicious desserts.  Really, I am almost stumped to think of a social event where food/drink is not a key player.

As an event planner, food is a major factor in our events.  I spend a good amount of time picking the proper menu based on the event logistics.  If it is a cocktail party, single-bite items are the best, but they can’t be messy.  If the food isn’t a good match with the type of event, it directly impacts everyone’s mood.  People are irritated if they are trying to balance buffalo wings, a cocktail, and carry on a business conversation.  Food truly has a great effect in our social settings.  Interesting how food has so much power.
