Day 125: Country Cooking v. Modern Work

During the visit to my mother-in-law’s house, I was reminded about how I used to eat.  She lives in the country and is accustomed to “country cooking.”  Country cooking is not in line with the Sonoma Diet by any means.  This cooking method usually involves deep frying, huge poritons, and lots of added fats via butter, sour cream, sauces, etc.  It also ALWAYS involves dessert after meals.  When talking with my husband and his mom, I discovered that big helpings of dessert (usually pecan pie with ice cream) were commonplace and vegetables were quite rare.  If veggies were present, it usually was fried okra.  Sweets for breakfast were acceptable.
My grandmother also grew up on a farm and cooked this way.  As a result, this is how my mother learned to cook and fed us growing up.  However, they are missing how this doesn’t line up with our modern lifestyle.  Back in the old days, people would spend all day doing manual labor on the farm:  feeding cows/chickens, plowing, picking cotton, etc.  They burned significant calories and needed the protein and carbs for fuel.  In this case, the large country cooked meal was beneficial.  However, our friends and family now work out of climate controlled offices typing on computers.  Less energy is expended for this type of work, but yet they are still eating the same way they were raised. 

My family now cannot believe that I am the same person they grew up with.  I now very rarely drink sodas, never have desserts, limit my portion sizes, and consciously watch my fat intake.
