DAY 25: DAILY ZONE TIPS

Submitted by Live to Eat or ... on Thu, 06/01/2006 - 4:35pm.

Today, I thought I would examine a section of the Zone Diets website called “Daily Zone Tips.” It is title “Grandma was right,” which sparked my interest. Both of my Grandmothers were profoundly influential upon my life, and both taught me many life skills associated with diet and etiquette. We will see if grandmothers really were right and if I practice what I was taught.

The first tip suggests that sitting down is the best way to eat. I never really thought this needed to be said, because I believe that most individuals, given the chance, will sit down when they eat. The reasoning seems a bit faulty, because it concludes that the sensors that tell you when you are full have more aptitude for signaling when you no longer require food. I sit down for 95% in not more of my meals, and when I overeat I do not feel it till I stand up from the table or if I stretch. Grandmother never told me this one.

The second tip suggests that you fully chew your food. I did learn this lesson and agree with it. The more you chew, the more chance your saliva can break down the food, which makes it easier to digest. I am in full support of this tip.

The third tip suggests eating a mandatory breakfast within one hour of rising. I agree with this tip as well. Breakfast helps jump start your metabolism, which starts your body burning calories. Definitely a grandmother anecdote.

Eat a small portion of protein with every meal. Not grandmothers quote per say, but they always a protein with every meal, so I will give the Zone Diet a check. Protein is vital for a healthy body and metabolism.

Eat your fruits and vegetables. This is by far the most used Grandmother saying and both of mine in grained this in my psyche. To grow up strong and healthy, and maintain your body, you must fill your body with the most colorful vegetable and fruits. I have used this in my diet my whole life and agree whole heartedly.

After analyzing the tips I give the Zone Diet 4.5 out of 5 on correctness. Of course, I am no doctor…..or grandmother.
