DAY 76: EAT TO LIVE LONGER

I have never thought about it, but according to the Zone Diet, this eating lifestyle has health benefits other than losing weight.  I knew about the idea of controlling insulin levels, but the benefits seem quite hefty.  The Zone Diet states that its focus is to lower insulin levels, which can prevent adult onset diabetes, lower risk for heart disease, arthritis and osteoporosis.  I was also surprised at the affects it could have on reducing chances of breast cancer.  I did not realize how much that could affect me, but I discovered that men account for 1% of all breast cancer.  I would like to limit my risk of all of these diseases.

If eating correctly can limit this much disease and sickness, I wonder why so many do not heed the warnings.  I have had many family members affected by each of these illnesses and I can’t imagine following their parody, when the possible anecdote is blatantly obvious.  This revelation is an inspiration and boost to my resolve of keeping my lifestyle in the Zone.  Scientists and physicians are always searching for the cure to every disease, but in fact if we practice preventative healthcare less individuals would need a cure to a disease they prevented themselves from having.   I am not saying that all diseases are our fault, but I am sure the number of people affected by these diseases would be much less if a proactive healthy diet was pursued.
